Precipitation Retrievals from Passive Microwave Cross-Track Sensors: The Precipitation Retrieval and Profiling Scheme

The retrieval of precipitation (snowfall and rainfall) from satellite sensors on a global basis is essential in aiding our knowledge understanding the Earth System for many societal applications. Measurements surface-based instruments are essentially limited to populated regions, necessitating use satellite-based observations provide estimates across whole Earth’s surface. temporal spatial variability requires adequate sampling, especially at finer resolutions. It is, therefore, necessary exploit all available data precipitation-capable satellites ensure proper representation precipitation. To date, estimation using passive microwave has been largely concentrated upon conically scanning imaging instruments, with relatively few techniques exploiting made cross-track sounders. This paper describes development Precipitation Retrieval Profiling Scheme (PRPS) retrieve sensors, together its performance against surface radar other retrievals.
